Doug Hincks - personal statement
My interest in Mission Morogoro was sparked by my love for Tanzania. I lived in Arusha Tanzania for over 8 years in the 80s. My work involved designing and building facilities in mainly the northern and north western area of Tanzania. The buildings included mainly hospitals and clinics but also churches, schools and colleges. I was a civil engineer working for a non-profit organisation. Most of the projects were funded by churches and agencies based in Europe. It was in Arusha that I met my wife and we had our first child while working there.
Finding that Mission Morogoro had its member base in our area of Worcestershire, I was very keen to get involved in their activities. I have been attending meetings and events of Mission Morogoro for over 6 years. It has been very rewarding to participate and assist with the various activities of Mission Morogoro including fund raising, welcoming Tanzanian guests, deliberating on present and future projects. Tunguli village being the focus of the charity’s work, we have seen the need for expertise in assisting the people there especially in regards to maternal health but also the health and well being of the whole village and surrounding area. It has been exciting to see the introduction of various new water wells and latrines, a motor cycle ambulance for the health centre, work with the women’s groups and engaging with the local schools as well.
I believe my background and technical expertise can be a big benefit to Mission Morogoro and their work. My appointment as Trustee in 2024 will hopefully be a positive impact at our charity and the ongoing partnership with the peoples of Tunguli.
